Whole Foods Market's Trends Council unveiled its top 10 anticipated food movements for 2024.
Every year, an alliance of over 50 staff members from the store gather trend forecasts grounded in their industry expertise, customer tastes, and collaborations with various brands.
"Our yearly food movement forecast gives us an opportunity to give customers a glimpse behind the scenes, offering a peek into what our purchasers and culinary specialists are watching closely for the next year," remarked Cathy Strange, the spokesperson for food culture at Whole Foods Market and a member of the Trends Council. "From particular product components and taste directions to emerging shifts in the food sector, we're eager to witness the rise of these movements in the coming year."
Among the top 10 movements, two particularly alluded to the baking sector: Get Ready for Buckwheat and Mini Delights.
Get Ready for Buckwheat
Buckwheat, a time-honored pseudo-grain seed, is making headway in the consumer goods arena. Given its protein, carbohydrate, and fiber advantages, plus its innate gluten-free nature, this ingredient is making its mark on retail racks. Items like Maine Crisp Buckwheat Biscuits in Rich Fig & Thyme, Bob’s Red Mill Buckwheat Pancake & Waffle Blend, and Chic Vegan Chocolate Cardamom pastries containing buckwheat flour are set to launch in December.
Mini Delights
Driven by the "Tiny Treat Phenomenon," which saw a surge on TikTok, this movement emphasizes petite moments of luxury often packaged individually and at a more affordable rate. The Trends Council highlighted treats like the store’s on-demand macarons from their in-store bakery for this movement.
